Adressing some issues

Postby spike800 » Sat Apr 03, 2010 9:47 pm

As you've experienced, Comeecs.com has had some downtime. My webhost, 5quidhost.co.uk, allows for 2 GB bandwidth per month with my current payment plan of 2 british pounds per month.

It has come to my attention that some of you are willing to chip in with the payment, so I'd just let you know the deal:

The next payment plan is 5 british pounds per month. With that, I get 20 GB of bandwidth instead (10x more). That would mean no more downtime and also I get some much needed additional space (so I'd have room to upgrade my phpBB installation). If you value this site enough, you'd might consider chipping in a buck or two.

Now, I don't want too mooch off people. I'm not asking you to do this, this is only a solution for the downtime if you want one. I ought to explain why I'm so cheap and not paying everything myself. This school project (yes, Comeecs.com is a school project) started in september 2009. I chose 5quidhost because they had low, honest rates and they had gotten good reviews. Now, since then, some things have happened. I will move across the pond to Williamsburg, Virginia this fall to study for one term. I got this great opportunity through a scholarship that pays my tuition for that term (15k dollars). Here in Sweden, such large fees are unheard of, and therefore the concept of "saving up for college" is not practised here. Since I will pay for airplane tickets, housing, food, insurance, books and everything else, my visit to America will rack up several thousand dollars. Being aware of this, I try to avoid any unnecessary expenses. Frankly, Comeecs.com is just a hobby, and so I'd hope you'd understand my situation. I don't have a job, but hopefully I will get a summer job.

TL; DR: I have expensive studies in USA ahead of me, I'm trying to hold on to my money.

Some numbers:
My current plan: 24 GBP / year (27 EUR, 36 USD)
Level 2 plan: 60 GBP / year (67 EUR, 91 USD

Currently i have enough credits payed in to support the level 1 service until september. Upgrading that service during that time would therefore cost 15 GDP.
I have a PayPal account, but DON'T donate money there unless you have made an agreement with other members of the community that they'll contribute as well. The investment must have meaning. If you only manage to chip a months worth, there's really no use.

I'm just as poor as you are, is there anything I can do?

First of all, disable your adblocker. Ads are important. If I just manage to get one payment from google, I could pay for a whole year of downtime-less webhosting. Unfortunately I'm not there yet. If you already have disabled your adblocker (or don't have one), you can always spread the word. Invite new people. Paradoxically, that will put more strain on the servers, sure, but hopefully there will be a positive trend in my revenue model.

Peace
