When I hit the states.. First thing I will do is to buy a laptop (well, first thing will be to pay my rent and insurance in advance, a cold 32k.. ), I figure I'd land somewhere in the 800 dorra region. Now, this baby caught my eye today:

quad core, 0,5 TB of storage, 17,3" screen, 4 GB and a ati mobility radeon 5650 or whatnot. According to notebookcheck, that gpu will suffice for most games, actually. Anyone had any experience with buying laptops recently? Is this a good deal? Anyone dealt with newegg? I just hope this deal is still present when I plan to buy it in late august...

Considering the price, and what you get that sucker is a beast of a laptop :O
Also it's Acer so it won't be the best quality but it's good enough (I have an Acer atm from their new line, which I think that one you linked is also from is really good quality compared to their older ones)

What does quality matter?

Well on laptops... a lot! But since it's not a bad quality laptop you are getting I don't need to go into detail about this atm, unless you find another brand you think you want and it is lower quality but perhaps better hardware for the same price... but anyway. I would definitely get that laptop

Depends on the usage, from what I understand Spike doesn't intend to move it much, will probably spend most of it's time at his flat/dorm. As such 17 inch is perfect, especially since Spike won't have any other PC there with him!
